Kinross - The Smiddy
The Smiddy is a sensitive contemporary house extension to an existing 19th-century building within the historic centre of Kinross. The project creates a generous new living space that opens onto a south-facing garden, improving the connection between the home and its outdoor setting.
A timber-clad linking element connects the new extension to the existing Smiddy house, allowing the addition to read as a distinct garden pavilion. Constructed in stone with a shallow pyramidal hipped roof, the new building takes cues from the materials and character of the existing property while introducing a carefully considered contemporary intervention.
The position of the extension creates a sheltered courtyard garden to the western side of the property, providing a more intimate external space that connects directly with the existing dining room.
Through careful planning, natural materials and a restrained architectural language, the project enhances the historic building while creating a modern, light-filled family home.
