Spean Bridge - Highland Retreat
Extensive renovation and refurbishment of a Victorian villa in Spean Bridge, Lochaber, creating a contemporary family home while respecting the architectural character and heritage of the original building. The project includes the remodelling of the internal layout, improvements to the entrance approach and the sensitive conversion of an existing coach house into a detached two-bedroom home.
The design seeks to preserve the proportions, craftsmanship and architectural integrity of the existing villa while introducing carefully considered contemporary interventions that sit comfortably alongside the historic fabric. A restrained palette of natural materials and refined detailing creates a subtle dialogue between old and new, allowing the home to evolve while retaining a strong connection to its Victorian origins and dramatic Highland setting.

Sustainability is central to the approach, with the project focusing on the careful adaptation and upgrading of the existing buildings rather than replacement. The proposals incorporate a fabric-first approach, including high-performance wood wool insulation, alongside renewable energy technologies such as a ground source heat pump, solar panels and battery storage. Existing materials and features will be retained and reused wherever possible, helping to reduce embodied carbon while preserving the character and identity of the original buildings.
Through a combination of sensitive conservation, contemporary design and significant energy improvements, the project demonstrates how historic buildings can be transformed into comfortable, efficient and sustainable homes for the future while maintaining their connection to place.
Currently in the detailed design stage, the project is expected to begin on site in 2027.
