Spean Bridge- The Coach House

Set within the dramatic Highland landscape of Spean Bridge, this project involves the sensitive conversion of a traditional coach house into a detached three-bedroom home.

The proposals seek to preserve the character and identity of the original buildings while adapting them to meet the needs of contemporary family life. Extensive internal alterations improve the relationship between spaces, natural light and the surrounding landscape, while a carefully considered arrival sequence enhances the approach to the site and creates a stronger sense of connection with its setting.

The existing Victorian character is celebrated through the careful retention and reuse of original materials and features, complemented by a restrained palette of contemporary interventions that introduce a new layer of detail and materiality. The conversion of the coach house provides additional accommodation while ensuring the historic outbuildings remain a meaningful and active part of the site.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are central to the design approach. The project incorporates a ground source heat pump, solar panels with battery storage, high-performance wood wool insulation and a fabric-first approach to upgrading the existing buildings. By improving the performance of the historic fabric while retaining and reusing existing materials, the proposals demonstrate how older buildings can be sensitively adapted to create comfortable, low-energy homes for the future.

The result is a carefully balanced transformation that respects the heritage of the Victorian villa and coach house while creating a contemporary, sustainable home deeply connected to the Highland landscape.

The new first floor living space creates a ‘room in the trees’ with expansive areas of glazing to maximise the views.

A new stair extends upwards and outwards to the forest beyond, giving a sense of rising up into the tree tops.
